Walker & Wodehouse award-winning wines

At Walker & Wodehouse we pride ourselves on our longstanding relationships with suppliers. We recognise the attention and craftsmanship that goes into each of their wines, so it’s wonderful when they gain broader recognition in the wine trade.

We are thrilled to have received a host of recent awards for wines from our portfolio, and here are just a few of those that have been recognised.

Sommelier Wine Awards 2016 – Gold Medal Winners

Jaboulet La Petite Chapelle Hermitage 2007
This distinguished wine comes from one of the Rhone Valley’s best-known producers. Since the early 19th century Paul Jaboulet Aine has been synonymous with quality wine in the Rhone, and still uses traditional vinification methods today. The Syrah vines are planted in rich and varied soils with very diverse terroirs, giving the wine great complexity and revealing the variety’s beauty and finesse. The wine is full and generous with black fruits and sweet spices, silky tannins and a long finish.

Algueira Pizarra Ribeira Sacra 2012
At Adega Algueira the focus is on small yields of exceptional-quality, indigenous grapes. All are grown in the estate’s own vineyards on the banks of the River Sil – an area that was once settled by monks in the 12th century, giving the area its name Ribeira Sacra (sacred coast). Treaded traditionally by foot and barrel fermented, the Pizarra is a full-bodied wine made from 100% Mencia. Deep in colour and with mature fruit flavours, the wine is balanced by a firm backbone of minerality.

Best’s Great Western Riesling 2012
A winery steeped in Australian winemaking history, Best’s has been creating wines in the Great Western region of Victoria for over 140 years. With an impressive selection of old vines, the winemakers are able to create incredible finesse and focus in their wines. The Riesling is floral and zesty with great varietal intensity. On the palate, minerality and texture work together to create a wine of great tension.

Other gold medal winners:
• Fraser Gallop Parterre Chardonnay 2013
• Wynns Black Label Shiraz 2010
• Quinta do Vallado 10 Year Old Tawny NV
• Graham Beck Blanc de Blancs Brut 2010
• Truchard Carneros Pinot Noir 2013

The Wine Merchant Top 100 (all wines exclusive to Walker & Wodehouse)

Miguel Merino Mazuelo 2012, Quinta de la Cruz
As one of the smallest and youngest wineries in Spain —their first vintage was 1994— these wines are now among the most prestigious in the country, and exported to over 30 markets. Unique to the region, Miguel produces a single varietal Mazuelo (otherwise known as Carignan), made from old vines planted in 1981. Miguel’s wines all showcase a lovely purity of fruit, which is supple but structured. The Mazuelo is intense and spicy, and exhibits a vivid expression of its terroir.
