Enticing Chardonnay from the ‘enfant terrible’ of American winemaking
Charles Smith Eve Chardonnay 2014
A self-taught winemaker, Charles Smith is a true artisan and pioneer. After spending a decade managing rock bands around Europe, Charles decided to indulge his passion for food and wine by heading back to the States to open a wine shop. In 1999 he met a young French winemaker in Walla Walla who convinced him to start making his own wine, and since then he has become one of the most exciting names on the Washington wine scene.
The Charles Smith Eve Chardonnay is full of energy, with notes of apple blossom, hibiscus flower and a touch of lemon cream. It has a bracing minerality and a beautiful, long finish.
Two pale pink beauties from Provence
Chateau D’Esclans les Clans Rosé 2012 – available in magnums and jeroboams
Nothing says summer like a large-format bottle of chilled rosé! This ultra-pale Provencal rosé from Chateau D’Esclans is available in both magnums and jeroboams, and is a hypnotic blend of Grenache and Rolle (Vermentino). The chateau is best known for its old Grenache vines, some of which are over 90 years old and produce grapes of intense concentration and flavour.
“Full body plus loads of flavour and richness. Intense and flavourful. Has a long, long finish.” – 94/100 James Suckling
“It’s really great that rosé has this kind of wine in the category – something to aspire to.” – Jancis Robinson
