Happy New Year (of the rooster)!
Chinese wine isn’t a gimmick. With the wine press abuzz with its potential and the Ningxia government investing serious amounts of money in this quality winegrowing region, the year of the Rooster, which starts on 28 January, could well be the year Chinese wine hits the mainstream.
Introducing Chateau Changyu Moser XV
The very first Chinese winery founded in 1892, Chateau Changyu Moser XV is leading the export charge for Chinese wine and we’re exceptionally proud to represent them in the UK! The present day Chateau was developed in consultation with renowned Austrian winemaker Lenz Moser, who has been a consultant and winemaking advisor there since 2005. Lenz is the 15th generation of his family to be involved in winemaking and on visiting China’s Ningxia province he became convinced of its potential for making wines of exceptional quality.
After nearly a decade’s dedication to the project, Chateau Changyu Moser XV was officially opened in 2013. With investment of the equivalent of 70 million euros, no expense has been spared to make a truly remarkable Chateau and barrel cellar. This is an exciting, dynamic and ambitious wine producer with a serious commitment to making world-class wines.
What makes Ningxia province so special?
Lying at approximately 1,330 kilometres west of Bejing in Central Western China, Ningxia has a similar latitude to Napa Valley, Bordeaux and Tuscany. And like these three regions has become famous for its exceptional blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
It is located on the fringes of the Gobi desert at an altitude of 1100 metres in the Helan Mountains; the area experiences hot daytime temperatures but cold nights which retain the grapes freshness. The long sunlight hours (3,000 on average during the growing season) lead to optimum grape ripeness.
Ningxia currently has 539, 000 acres of vine, 72 wineries and a wine school with 3,000 students. 100 million bottles were produced in 2014, with plans to increase this to 200 million by 2025. This is definitely a region to watch!
