Creation

On the outskirts of Hermanus in the highly acclaimed Walker Bay wine region, the rustic Hemel-en-Aarde valley winds along the undulating Babylon Toren Mountain. Follow this scenic road to the top and you’ll arrive at Creation, perched high up on the picturesque Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. The translation of Hemel-en-Aarde is ‘Heaven and Earth’ – and the name says it all.

As the last trap was removed, husband and wife team Jean-Claude and Carolyn Martin celebrated with a glass of their Viognier. It had taken a while, but now their farm was safe from the wildlife that roams in this part of South Africa. It was an important conservation step they both knew had to be taken. Since founding Creation in 2002, Jean-Claude and Carolyn have led conservation efforts for the area, becoming one of only nine wineries in South Africa to receive EnviroWines accreditation. It’s not simply an audit, but scientific measurement of every management practice.
