The first premium winery in the San Juan region of Argentina, Finca La Moras was established by viticulturalist Richard Smart in 1993. It takes its name from the mulberry trees that border the estate. Situated to the north of Mendoza with some vineyards at altitudes of over 1300m, this region has figuratively if not literally been in the shadow of its better known neighbour. Shiraz and Malbec fare particularly well in this sunny, dry region, ideal for the production of organic grapes. The estate has more than 1100 hectares of vineyards at its disposal and is focused on sustainability and innovation in both vineyard and winery. This philosophy is perfectly expressed in wines such as the Gran Syrah, with grapes selected from the estate vineyards in each of the three main valleys, at differing altitudes, each parcel bringing a different level of complexity to the wine. The Late Harvest Viognier is another example, intensely aromatic and decadent.
