Shop Rioja

Your chance to win £1,000 with ‘Shop Rioja’ in October

As we tiptoe into autumn, what better time to re-kindle our love for Spain’s most famous wine. From 1 to 30 October independent merchants and retailers all over the country will be raising awareness of the quality and diversity of wines from Rioja, by taking part in the month-long ‘Shop Rioja’ promotion.

Participating retailers will be in with a chance of winning £1,000 towards new Rioja wine listings, and of earning the title of Large Rioja Retailer of the Year (3 -15 outlets) or Small Rioja Retailer of the Year (up to 3 outlets).

So what do you have to do?

The aim is to raise awareness of wines from Rioja, encourage customers to participate in the promotion and drive sales. This could be by holding in-store tastings and promotions, hosting a winemaker dinner or teaming up with a local restaurant – it’s your chance to be as creative as you like!

Wines of Rioja are providing a great selection of POS to dress your shop including chalkboards, window stickers, neck collars and regional posters. They’ll be holding a competition on Instagram and Twitter with a weekly winner for the best display – so make sure you submit a picture using #Riojabestdressed.

There’s also plenty of branded merchandise available to hand out to customers including corkscrews, bags, aprons and bottle bags.

Need some inspiration?

Walker & Wodehouse are pleased to work with three fantastic Rioja producers, Navajas, Miguel Merino and Cosme Palacio, who would be perfect participants in your Shop Rioja promotion.

Navajas

Founded in 1918, Bodegas Navajas is still owned by the same family who have remained dedicated to producing quality Rioja from generation to generation. Attention to detail is key and the love and care with which they oversee every stage of the winemaking process sets them apart from many other producers in the region. Their 150ha of vines in Rioja Alta are carefully monitored then hand harvested before going to their state-of-the-art winery in the village of Navarette.

Miguel Merino

Small is beautiful at Miguel Merino. Production comes from eight small vineyards, producing just 45,000 bottles each year. Over 22 vintages Miguel and his son have built an enviable reputation for their wines, whose hallmarks are elegance and finesse. From the single vineyard Mazuelo, a rarity for this region, to the elegantly structured Vitola Reserva, these wines are a brilliant example of modern day Rioja.

Cosme Palacio

Cosme Palacio is set amid the imposing mountain range of Rioja Alavesa, the very smallest sub-zone of Rioja DOCa. This exceptional terroir was once known as ‘the Medoc of Alava’ because of its high altitude, exceptional geology and south-facing aspect. The winemaker is Roberto Rodriguez, the son of a cooper, under whose guidance the winery has developed a more modern style of Rioja, full of plush fruit, intense aromatics and restrained use of oak.
