Coates & Seely english wine

Coates & Seely ‘Britagne’ joins our portfolio

As sales of English sparkling wine continue to flourish, we are delighted to announce the arrival of Coates & Seely to our portfolio. From the original idea in 2007, Christian Seely and Nicolas Coates are today proud custodians of a Hampshire vineyard they have restored and developed, in partnership with the vineyard’s owner, Daphne Cunningham.

Nestled deep in the North Downs, the original 20 acre ‘Wooldings’ vineyard has been extended to include an additional 18 acres, planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

The two sites enjoy south-west and south-east facing aspects, with a steep gradient ensuring English sunshine is exploited to its full extent. These factors, together with the richly imbued chalk soil, make this a perfect location for ‘Britagne’, the moniker Coates & Seely have chosen for their wines, reflecting the marriage of English terroir and Champagne expertise.

Brut Reserve NV – 65% Chardonnay and 35% Pinot Noir blend, with wines from the 2010 and 2011 vintage, as well as a percentage of 2009. Aged for three years on its lees and a further year in bottle, the wine is beautifully crisp with green apple characters and an evident minerality. It is a perfect partner for shellfish.

Brut Rosé NV – 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Pinot Meunier, this is a delicious sparkling wine that perfectly marries acidity and English redcurrant sweetness. Brisk and moreish, it is very versatile and will easily pair with duck, lobster or veal.

We will be showing the Coates & Seely Brut Reserve NV and Brut Rosé NV at our Spring Tastings on 7 and 8 March.
