Soon to celebrate 100 years of family winemaking, Babich Wines are synonymous with quality New Zealand wine production, now with a portfolio of estates in Auckland, Hawkes Bay and Marlborough. Josip Babich made the journey from Dalmatia, now Croatia, aged 14 in 1910 to join his brothers near Auckland and at the tender age of 20 was bottling his first wine under the Babich Brothers label. The family tradition continues to this day with brothers Peter and Joe Babich at the helm, and Peter’s son David as general manager.
Winemaking for all estates is overseen by Adam Hazeldine, who although not a Babich, has done pretty much every job in the winery so could be classed as family! The wines include the classic range of single varietals, the Family Estates wines sourced from single vineyard sites such as the Cowslip Valley Riesling, and the Patriarch red blend, in honour of Josip Babich, made on the Gimblett Gravels Irongate vineyard in Hawkes Bay.
